Fuel spill chaos at Newport Sainsbury’s filling station
Firefighters from the Islands Fire and Rescue Service rushed to Sainsbury’s petrol station on Honey Cross Way in Newport just before midday on Wednesday. A Landrover Freelander leaked fuel all over the forecourt after a fault while refuelling, forcing the station to shut down.
Risky fuel leak sparks fast fire service action
The leaking fuel led to one hose reel being deployed as crews worked hard to stop the flammable liquid from entering the drainage system. Firefighters also used sand and environmental kits to contain the spill and keep the scene safe.
The driver, who wished to remain anonymous, praised the rapid response. “I know how serious leaking fuel can be. A vehicle once caught fire near me — it goes just like that. I still have the scars as a reminder.”
Cleanup and recovery underway
The filling station is expected to stay closed for several hours while the fuel spill is cleaned up and the damaged Landrover is removed via flatbed recovery truck.
More updates to follow as the emergency response continues.
