Firefighters Ditch Birthday Bash to Tackle Blaze at Sandown Care Home
Fire crews scrambled from a firefighter’s birthday party to battle a blaze at a former care home in Sandown last night.
Multiple Fire Appliances Battle Flames
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service sprung into action just before 10pm Wednesday. Over four fire engines, including units from Bembridge, Newport, and Shanklin, rushed to the scene of the fire at the vacant property.
An aerial ladder platform was also deployed, helping crews take on the blaze from above. Six firefighters armed with breathing apparatus entered the building to suppress the fire, using three two-hose reels and a jet.
Swift Response Prevents Worse Damage
Neighbours reported the building might have been squatted, raising safety concerns. Thanks to the prompt efforts of the first crews, the fire was contained before it could spread to the roof.
Investigation Underway as Cause Remains Unclear
One investigating officer has been called in, with a joint probe from the fire service and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police now under way. The cause of the fire is considered suspicious.
“One crew had to leave a firefighter’s birthday party to respond to this serious incident,” a source said.
