Massive Warehouse Blaze Sparks Evacuations in Croydon
Firefighters raced to a huge warehouse fire in Croydon on Thursday evening. The blaze, which broke out just before 6pm, has swallowed a large pile of tyres, sending thick black smoke billowing across South London.
Inferno at Croydon Warehouse
Six fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were dispatched to tackle the flames at a warehouse on 1 Road. The blaze sent a choking cloud of smoke into the air, with firefighters struggling to contain the rubber fire.
1 Way is currently closed both ways between Cecil Road and the A236 Mitcham Road, causing major traffic disruption.
Evacuations Over Explosive Gas Cylinder Fear
Multiple calls flooded in reporting not just flames but a nasty smell of burning rubber. The fire is dangerously close to a roofing company, raising alarms.
By 7pm, several homes nearby were evacuated amid fears that gas cylinders at the site could explode. Witnesses reported seeing “massive” flames engulfing a nearby tree before firefighters arrived.
High-Tech Gear Brought In to Fight Fire
Due to the risk from gas cylinders, fire chiefs deployed a specialist High Volume Pump usually used for flooding emergencies. This powerful submersible pump can move up to 7,000 litres of water per minute, helping crews control the blaze.
The pump’s high flow impeller and flotation chamber make it perfect for pumping water from nearby supplies to fight the stubborn fire.
Emergency services remain at the scene as efforts to douse the fire continue. Locals urged to avoid the area.
