Blaze Breaks Out at Mitcham Lane Takeaway
Chaos erupted on Mitcham Lane, London, as a fire tore through a suspected dodgy ventilation system at a local takeaway. Emergency services raced to the scene after the property owner spotted the smoke and raised the alarm.
Fire Brigade Battles Flames
The London Fire Brigade wasted no time dispatching three fire engines and a command unit. Around 25 firefighters from Tooting, Mitcham, Norbury, and Brixton squads tackled the blaze in the multi-storey property.
Thanks to their swift action, the fire was contained mainly to the kitchen area, sparing the rest of the building from major damage. The ducting from ground floor to roof level was destroyed, and a small section of the first floor roof suffered fire damage.
Road Closures and Disruptions
Police from the Met stepped in to manage road closures around Mitcham Lane as transport services rerouted to dodge the emergency zone. Locals are advised to expect delays and plan alternative routes.
No Injuries Reported as Investigation Underway
Five people evacuated the building before firefighters arrived. Luckily, there are no reports of injuries. The fire was fully extinguished by 3.09pm after first alerts came through a little after 2pm.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled a fire at a mid-terraced shop and dwellings on Mitcham Lane in Tooting. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
