Massive Blaze Hits Southampton Car Workshop – Streets Closed, Smoke Fills Air
Six fire engines are battling a fierce blaze at a single-storey car workshop in Southampton. Locals are warned to keep windows and doors tightly shut as thick smoke billows through the area.
Shirley High Street and Surrounding Roads Shut
Police have shut Shirley High Street, with Newlands Avenue and Janson Road also affected by closures. Firefighters, around 30 strong, were scrambled to the scene on Lumsden Avenue just after 10.45am.
Southampton’s First bus services 1, 2, 3, and 12 are on diversion, rerouted via Paynes Road and Mill Brook West Road. Residents nearby reported huge plumes of black smoke clouding the neighbourhood.
“The neighbourhood is filled with black smoke. I had to close the windows, it was that bad,”
said Chloe McKenzie, who lives on Shirley Road. She added parts of the road have been closed off due to the fire.
Fire Crews Use Full Force to Tackle Blaze
Hampshire Fire and Rescue have dispatched crews from St Mary’s, Eastleigh, and surrounding areas. An aerial ladder platform from St Mary’s is also in use. Firefighters in breathing apparatus are battling the flames using five jets and a hose reel.
Adjoining buildings have been evacuated as the fire is tackled from outside. Nearby drainage systems have been sealed off to prevent contaminated run-off entering the water system.
South Central Ambulance Service sent a rapid response paramedic and an ambulance crew to standby at the scene. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported and everyone in the affected buildings made it out safely.
Cause of Southampton Workshop Fire Still Unknown
The fire’s origin remains under investigation, with the fire and rescue service and other agencies working on the scene to determine how the blaze started.
