Balcony Blaze in Lewisham Flat Sparks Fire Safety Warning
A balcony on the fourth floor of a seven-storey block was left damaged after a fire broke out early this morning. Luckily, no one was hurt.
Fire Brigade Points Finger at Careless Smoking
The London Fire Brigade’s investigation team say the blaze was accidental. They blame unsafe disposal of smoking materials as the likely cause.
A spokesperson for the Brigade warned: “We’d rather you didn’t smoke at all, but if you are a smoker, it’s absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it.”
“If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy your home, but also cost you your life.”
Rapid Response From Fire Crews
The Brigade was called at 3.05am and had the fire under control by 3.47am. Crews from Deptford, New Cross, Greenwich, and Lewisham fire stations tackled the flames.
Top Fire Safety Tips for Smokers
- Smoke outside if possible. Always fully extinguish and dispose of cigarettes safely.
- Never smoke in bed or on soft furnishings – falling asleep with a cigarette is deadly.
- Be extra careful when tired, on medication, or after drinking alcohol.
- Use sturdy ashtrays that won’t tip over and stub out cigarettes properly.
- Empty ashtrays with caution.
- Make sure all smoking materials are cold or wet before binning them – never toss into a wastepaper basket.
