Blaze Erupts in Derelict Building on Southampton Outskirts
Firefighters Battle Smoke and Flames in Freemantle
Fire crews from across Southampton sprang into action after a ferocious blaze broke out at a run-down building on Waterloo Road, Freemantle. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky this lunchtime (Monday, April 26), casting a dark cloud over the area as firefighters, decked in breathing apparatus, fought the fire with hose reels.
Concern for Homeless Shelter in Flames
Initial reports suggest the derelict site may have been sheltering members of the homeless community. Firefighters launched a thorough search after arriving just after 12:10pm, ensuring no one was trapped inside.
Emergency Services Respond at Full Force
- Three fire engines from St Mary’s, Eastleigh, and Cosham stations tackled the flames.
- South Central Ambulance Service dispatched one ambulance to the scene.
- Hampshire Police closed Waterloo Road at the junction with Vara Road and Park Road, blocking traffic both ways.
Police confirmed the fire is not being treated as suspicious, ruling out foul play.
Damage Contained to Shed, Main Building Spared
Firefighters managed to contain the fire to a garden shed attached to a two-storey building, which only suffered smoke damage. A police spokesperson commented:
We were called just after 12pm to reports of a fire on Waterloo Road, Southampton. Officers assisted Hampshire Fire and Rescue as they dealt with the fire. The fire is not being treated as suspicious.”
Residents and drivers are advised to avoid the area while emergency teams clear the scene.
