Factory Inferno Ravages Belvedere as Firefighters Battle Into Third Day

Fire crews are locked in a fierce fight against a blazing factory fire in Belvedere, which has now stretched into its third day. The inferno broke out at a commercial recycling facility on Mulberry Way at around 10am on September 16, sparking a major emergency response from the London Fire Brigade (LFB) and London Ambulance Service.

Blaze Centres on Hard-to-Reach Conveyor Belt

The heart of the fire is a corkscrew conveyor belt used for processing waste metal—an awkward spot that has hindered crews’ efforts to douse the flames. Despite the challenges, no injuries have been reported, a rare silver lining amid the chaos.

Firefighters Brace for Long Haul

LFB confirmed firefighters will stay on-site through the night and into tomorrow as they battle to control the blaze. A 500-metre safety cordon is in place, and part of the A2016 road remains closed, disrupting local businesses and forcing multiple bus route diversions.

Official Statement & Ongoing Investigation

“Firefighters are responding to an incident at an industrial site on Church Manorway, Erith. The incident involves a corkscrew conveyor belt alight, and crews are now working to reduce it to the building’s ambient temperature. This is a protracted incident, and firefighting operations will extend into tomorrow (18 September),” said an LFB spokesperson.

Crews from Erith, Plumstead, Greenwich, and nearby fire stations continue to tackle the blaze. The cause remains under investigation. Meanwhile, residents are urged to avoid the area to ease disruption caused by road closures and detours.
