Tragic Find in Brighton: Baby’s Body Discovered After Massive Hunt
Police in Brighton have made a heartbreaking discovery. After a nearly two-month, 200-strong search, officers found the body of a baby linked to missing couple Constance Marten and Mark Gordon. The grim discovery happened in a wooded area near where the couple was arrested this Monday.
Couple Arrested Amid Child Neglect Investigation
Marten, an aristocrat with royal family ties, and Gordon, a convicted sex offender who served 20 years in an American prison for rape, were first detained on suspicion of child neglect. They were spotted by a member of the public at a shop in Brighton before being arrested again on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter for refusing to reveal the baby’s whereabouts.
“I understand that the end of this investigation will be heartbreaking for the local community and the general public,” said Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford. He vowed police would “do everything possible” to uncover what happened.
High-Tech Search Operation Covers 90 Square Miles
Officers launched a huge search over allotments, woodland, and residential areas spanning 90 square miles around Brighton. They deployed drones, sniffer dogs, thermal cameras, and a helicopter to scour locations like Wild Park in Moulsecoomb.
The body was found within an extensive crime scene cordon near allotments. A post-mortem examination is planned to determine the cause of death.
Couple’s Flight from Police: From Car Fire to Camping Gear
The drama began in early January when the couple’s car caught fire on the M61 near Bolton shortly after Marten gave birth. The newborn received no medical attention. The couple then vanished, evading authorities for weeks.
They were later tracked to various locations, including Liverpool, Essex, and East London. CCTV footage shows Gordon limping with a stick as they moved around. On 7 January, they were caught on camera buying camping gear in Whitechapel as they survived rough conditions, reportedly sleeping in tents and trying to stay under the radar.
Police suspect the couple used cash and masks to keep a low profile, travelling mainly at night.
Community in Shock as Investigation Continues
Marten’s wealthy family had pleaded for her to come forward. Police have been granted extra time to question both suspects as the investigation unfolds.
The tragic case has sent shockwaves through Brighton and beyond, with the public desperate for answers about the fate of the missing baby.
