UK’s Elite ISAR Team Joins Global Disaster Rescue Effort

Britain’s Fireheroes Ready to Deploy Worldwide

The UK ISAR team, made up of top specialists from British fire and rescue services, is on call to tackle disasters across the globe, representing the UK government in international rescue missions.

Each fire service supplies six expert search and rescue operatives. Now, their efforts will merge into a bigger, coordinated operation run by the United Nations to maximise impact.

Heavy Gear and High-Tech Tech On the Frontline

The team has shipped 14.5 tonnes of vital equipment, including state-of-the-art cameras and acoustic and seismic listening devices. These gadgets can detect trapped victims even buried under tonnes of rubble — a literal lifeline in catastrophic collapses.

Heroic Rescue of Man Trapped in ‘Bariatric’ Emergency

Just after 3am last Friday, four specially trained fire crews were scrambled to rescue a man trapped and unable to escape due to his size. The dramatic rescue ended around 8pm when the man was finally freed and rushed to Paddington Hospital.

This incident is one of many ‘bariatric rescues’ in recent years, where firefighters had to remove windows, dismantle fences, and build ramps with heavy-duty plywood to safely extract obese adults who were stuck, fallen, or needed urgent hospital care.

Specialist USAR teams from Croydon LFB were called in to assist. The tough operation even saw one firefighter hospitalised after battling to free the man, whose hospital transfer was delayed for months after two failed attempts when his bed broke.

Fully Equipped and Ready for Anything

The rescue crew’s striking orange jackets bear the words “Urban Search and Rescue”. They’re trained not only to find trapped people but also to stabilise dangerous structures and smash through concrete or debris blocking access.

During overseas deployments, the UK ISAR team travels fully self-sufficient with their own tents, food, water, and medical support. This ensures they don’t drain precious local resources — crucial in disaster zones like Kahramanmaras.
