Seven New Heroes Join Friends of the Family’s 5s to 13s Project!
Friends of the Family has bolstered its 5s to 13s Project with seven fresh volunteer befrienders. These new recruits completed an intensive training course on 14th and 21st April, diving into key topics such as safeguarding, confidentiality, parenting styles, and the challenges children face today.
Experienced Volunteers Share Wisdom
The trainees also gained valuable insights from veteran volunteer Jim Ford, who has been a befriender since April 2015. Guest speaker Kevin Knight delivered essential lessons on communication and listening skills, sharpening their ability to support vulnerable youngsters.
Volunteers from Near and Far
Ranging in age from 37 to 69, the new volunteers hail from central Winchester and nearby villages like Otterbourne, Fishers Pond, Owslebury, and Colden Common.
Why Volunteer? Real Stories from the Heart
Amanda, a recent retiree, said: “I’m at the time in my life when I can give something back and what’s more important than being able to help a young person?”
Nancy, mum of two in their twenties, called the training “a real eye-opener” and hopes it will “give me the confidence to build a strong, supportive bond with my focus child and their family.”
Sam Hunt, leader of the 5s to 13s Project, said: “It’s reassuring to know we have seven more volunteers ready to offer friendship and support to families across Winchester.”
