Gatwick Trains Future Guide Dogs Amid Airport Hustle
Gatwick Airport rolled out the red carpet for four trainee puppies from Guide Dogs UK in their second joint training event this year. Meet Louise, Lilly, Chip, and Panache—these furry recruits got a crash course in airport life to prepare them for their crucial role as guide dogs.
Puppy Bootcamp at the Airport
The pups toured key spots including the special assistance lounge, security checkpoints, baggage reclaim, and even boarded an easyJet plane. This insider access helped them get used to the chaos and noise of an airport environment—no easy feat for young dogs.
But it wasn’t just about the pups. Airport staff also got a lesson in how to better assist guide dogs and their visually impaired owners, making sure everyone is ready for real-life scenarios.
Commitment to Accessibility
Anna-Ruth Cockerham, Gatwick Accessibility Manager, said: “Since 2017, we’ve hosted Guide Dogs UK visits, giving puppies a head start in handling what might be overwhelming. These visits help the dogs get used to the airport environment and allow our team to better support them and their owners.” “Looking ahead, Gatwick and our partners are committed to improving the experience for assistance dogs and the passengers they support through training and enhanced facilities.”
Elli Cavazza, Puppy Development Advisor at Guide Dogs UK, added: “The Gatwick team has been fantastic, welcoming our puppies and raisers. Early exposure to busy airports means our puppies won’t be fazed by strange sights and sounds once they start working.”
With this paw-some training, Gatwick is setting the standard for helping guide dogs and their owners breeze through travel stress-free.
