Tragic Farewell on Greek Isle as Irish Teens Die During Celebration Trip
A heartbreaking scene played out on the Greek Island of Ios as hundreds of students formed a guard of honour to say goodbye to two Irish teenagers who died in a tragic weekend incident. Andrew O’Donnell and Max Wall, both just 18, were part of a large group from St Michael’s College in Dublin celebrating their Leaving Certificate results.
Horror Unfolds: Andrew Missing, Max Found Unconscious
The nightmare began Friday night when Andrew vanished after a night out. Two days later, his body was found on rocky terrain. Shortly after, Max was discovered unconscious near the harbour and later died. It’s known Max had pre-existing heart problems.
Hundreds Gather to Honour Fallen Teens
On Tuesday, around 1,000 classmates, friends, and other students gathered at Ios port as Andrew and Max’s bodies were taken to Athens for post-mortems. Hundreds of students formed a solemn guard of honour to accompany the coffins.
Tom McCormack, former St Michael’s College Union president, said 60 classmates and family members travelled to Athens, supported by the parents’ association. Yellow roses — the symbol of friendship — were placed on the coffins before the ferry departed.
Community Mourns with Prayer and Condolences
Students back home held a prayer service in the school chapel Monday night. A second service took place Tuesday evening and was streamed online for those who couldn’t attend. St Michael’s has opened separate condolence books for Andrew and Max and covered the school gates in floral tributes.
The whole community remains in shock over the loss of two bright young lives on what should have been a celebration trip.
