Southampton Police Launch Stop and Search Blitz Amid Spike in Violence

Southampton cops have been handed extra powers to stop and search anyone in Swaythling tonight (June 12). The move follows two violent incidents over the past 48 hours.

Section 60 Powers Activated

Authorities authorised Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, allowing officers to stop and search people within a designated area. This rare power targets those carrying offensive weapons or blades, aimed at preventing further violence.

Violence Sparks Crackdown

  • June 10, 4.15pm: Police got reports of a large-scale public disorder on Monks Way involving young people armed with weapons.
  • June 11, 3.30-4pm: Two groups of youths were seen chasing each other near Cantell School, carrying planks of wood.

Officials received multiple calls from concerned residents and are responding to public fears by imposing the stop-and-search order.

Community Urged to Speak Up

“The threshold to implement a Section 60 power is very high and not used often, but it’s a vital tool to keep communities safe,” a police spokesperson said. “If you live in the area and have any concerns or witnessed these incidents, please get in touch with us.”

The Section 60 order will be reviewed and is set to expire at 11.59pm tonight.
