Green Light for £25m Fleming Park Leisure Centre Revamp in Eastleigh
Eastleigh is set for one of its biggest leisure makeovers ever! Last night (Wednesday 16 March), councillors gave the thumbs up to kickstart the redevelopment of Fleming Park Leisure Centre.
Interserve Takes the Helm
Eastleigh Borough Council’s Cabinet appointed Interserve, the international construction giant, as the main contractor. With its Hampshire base in Nursling, just outside Eastleigh, Interserve has wasted no time finalising plans, costs, and timelines. Work is expected to start by the end of April.
The new centre, designed by AHR architects, promises to be slick, modern, and eco-friendly — all while blending perfectly with the park’s green surroundings.
State-of-the-Art Facilities on the Way
- Expanded main pool: from six to eight lanes
- Larger teaching pool
- Extended and upgraded gym
- Spacious 15-court sports hall
- Improved café
- Free car parking retained
Despite being housed on a similar footprint as the current centre, clever design means more space inside — with zero loss of green space outside.
Building Without Disruption
The new building will rise right next to the existing centre, allowing the current facility to stay open and welcoming customers during construction.
The project is a £25 million enterprise but crucially, it won’t cost local taxpayers a penny. Funding comes from £2 million in Sport England grants, £90,000 from Netball England, and the rest from Eastleigh Borough Council.
Long-Term Plans and Commitment
Places for People Leisure have had their contract extended for 20 more years to manage the new centre. Income generated will cover operating costs through a guaranteed management fee.
“We’ve been working with our partners to finalise our plans and deliver a state-of-the-art leisure centre that is excellent value for Eastleigh residents,” said Councillor Keith House, Leader of Eastleigh Borough Council. “It’s high quality, environmentally friendly, and won’t cost council taxpayers a penny.”
