Kent gears up to tackle traffic chaos with new bold measures! As cross-Channel disruptions loom, Kent’s authorities are ready to crack down on lorries and keep the M20 moving.
Operation Brock: The Traffic Saviour of Kent
Operation Brock is the government’s plan to stop gridlock on the M20 during major Channel hiccups. It features a new movable barrier being installed by Highways England, which can be swung into place within hours to manage lanes and control traffic.
More measures are on the way, set to go live from December 2020. Following a recent consultation, fresh enforcement powers will clamp down hard on heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs) causing chaos when Short Straits Channel crossings hit snags.
Current Traffic Control Tools: Dover TAP, Operation Stack & Manston
Kent already uses a range of methods to keep traffic flowing, including the Dover TAP, Operation Stack, and potentially activating HGV holding zones at Manston Airport during severe disruption.
These measures kick in during major delays caused by freak weather or strikes, helping to avoid massive tailbacks.
Hauliers Beware: Check Your Paperwork or Pay Up!
A new online service allows hauliers to confirm that their heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) hold the correct EU import and commodity documents before crossing the border.
Using this service is mandatory for HGVs heading through the Port of Dover or Eurotunnel — it’s the only way to get a ‘Kent Access Permit’ to enter Kent.
Fail to check, or submit a fraudulent declaration, and you’re looking at a hefty £300 fine. The check is optional at other GB ports but highly recommended to avoid delays.
