Yorkshire Flood Panel Seeks Two New Members to Battle Rising Waters

The Environment Agency wants two fresh faces to join a key committee shaping flood and coastal management across Yorkshire. With nearly 247,000 homes at risk, flooding here isn’t just about water – it also hits transport, utilities, schools, and businesses hard.

Why Yorkshire Needs You

The Regional Flood and Coastal Committee (RFCC) decides where flood defence funds go and which projects get the green light. Now, they’re calling on people passionate about flood risk management to step up. Got experience or interest in any of these?

  • Climate change and its flood impact
  • Land use, farming, and drainage management
  • Nature-based solutions and biodiversity gains
  • Community engagement, especially working with flood-hit or coastal areas
  • Professional or academic flood risk knowledge
  • Understanding of Yorkshire’s economy and resilience

Leaders Rally Call to Action

“Storm Babet and Ciaran showed the devastating impact flooding can have on communities. These roles are an exciting chance to make a real difference in Yorkshire,” said Yorkshire RFCC Chair Professor Colin Mellors.

“We need two keen, dedicated members to help set strategic priorities amid a changing climate. It’s a fantastic opportunity to positively impact lives, businesses, and our environment,” added Stewart Mounsey, Environment Agency’s Yorkshire area director.

Time to Apply – No Pay, But Big Impact

The RFCC meets quarterly, with extra work as needed. While these roles are unpaid, expenses are covered. Yorkshire’s varied landscape and population of over five million face flooding from rivers, surface water, groundwater, and some of Europe’s fastest-eroding coastline.
