Four hero cops honoured for heroic train rescue at Doncaster Station
Four police officers have been handed national bravery awards after saving a woman critically injured under a train at Doncaster Station.
Life-saving moment on busy Doncaster platform
PCs Christopher Bell, Carl Holden, Tanveer Akhtar, and Ben Hawley earned Royal Humane Society Testimonials on Parchment for their daring actions on 12 August 2024. The officers were first on the scene after a woman became trapped underneath a train during a hectic rush.
Without a second thought, they climbed onto the tracks with first aid kits. PC Holden bravely crawled under the train to apply tourniquets to the woman’s badly injured legs. Meanwhile, PCs Bell, Akhtar, and Hawley treated her serious head injury as firefighters worked to free her from the tracks.
NHS surgeons hail lifesaving bravery
Surgeons praised the officers, saying the woman would not have survived without their immediate intervention. The lifesaving efforts prevented what could have been a fatal tragedy.

Chief Superintendent Pete Thorp, Doncaster’s District Commander, said:
“These four officers showed incredible bravery and skill in a horrific situation. The fundamental role of police is to protect and preserve life – that’s exactly what they did.”
Andrew Chapman, Secretary of the Royal Humane Society, added:
“They saw the woman needed urgent help and ignored the danger to themselves to save her life. They are true life-saving heroes.”
The Royal Humane Society is a UK charity that honours remarkable acts of bravery in saving lives with official awards and certificates.
