Shock Warning: Plug-in Energy Savers Explode on eBay

Video footage has revealed dangerous plug-in devices — some sold on eBay — exploding and risking fires and electric shocks, warns Electrical Safety First. The charity’s explosive findings have sent shockwaves through the online marketplace.

eBay Pulls Unsafe Products After Charity Investigation

After adverts promised big savings on energy bills, Electrical Safety First purchased four devices claiming to cut costs or “stabilise electrical current.” One came directly from GetMotex.com, three from eBay. All four failed basic safety tests, risking your home and health.

Testing showed the devices exploding under short circuit conditions, hurling burning metal fragments into the air. Faulty plug pins risk damaging sockets, and one device had an internal capacitor completely disconnected — rendering the ‘energy-saving’ tech useless.

Safety Chief Slams “Contemptible” Failures Amid Rising Bills

“Claims surrounding energy savings will undoubtedly be more attractive to people during this time yet the devices we have tested could cost you your safety,”

said Lesley Rudd, CEO of Electrical Safety First. “Given the current climate and hardship, these safety failures are even more contemptible. Buy only from retailers you know and trust.”

The charity has raised concerns with the Advertising Standards Authority and the Office for Product Safety and Standards about the misleading energy-saving claims.

eBay Acts Fast – But One Seller Still Selling Dangerous Devices

eBay responded swiftly, taking the products down and stressing they take safety “extremely seriously.” A spokesperson said the platform works closely with Westminster Trading Standards and uses algorithms and security teams to block unsafe items.

However, Electrical Safety First reports that the seller from GetMotex.com has yet to confirm any action. Shockingly, these risky devices remain available to snap up.

Don’t risk your safety chasing energy savings. Stick to trusted sources and beware ‘too good to be true’ gadgets.
