Firefighters Race to Islington Tower Block Blaze – Woman Injured in Dramatic Escape

Emergency crews scrambled to a Tower Block fire on Citizen Road, Islington in the early hours of Sunday, June 18, 2017. London Fire Brigade swiftly evacuated hundreds as smoke filled the stairwells.

Woman Injured After Daring Window Jump

A woman suffered injuries after leaping from a window to escape the flames. Paramedics treated her at the scene as neighbours rallied to support evacuees with hot and cold drinks while firefighters battled the blaze.

Small Fire Sparks Big Panic

London Fire Brigade confirmed the fire was confined to a small section of a flat on the second floor of the building on Hornsey Road, Holloway – part of Islington. Despite the modest size, thick smoke caused alarm among residents.

  • Five people were rescued by ladders.
  • About 200 left the building before firefighters arrived.

Station Manager John Ryan said: “When crews arrived, although it was a small fire it was creating quite a bit of smoke and residents were understandably concerned. Firefighters helped five people down by ladder and quickly put out the fire.”

Fire Safety Reminders in Wake of Grenfell

Ryan urged local residents not to panic but stay vigilant, especially following the recent Grenfell Tower tragedy.

“Make sure your home has working smoke alarms and test them regularly. If you spot a fire, call 999 immediately, alert everyone, and close doors behind you to slow fire and smoke spread,” he advised.

Note: Holloway is part of Islington.
