Hazardous Gas Leak Sparks Panic at Enfield Leisure Centre
Emergency Evacuation After Toxic Gas Alert
Albany Leisure Centre on Hertford Road, Enfield, was swiftly evacuated this afternoon following a dangerous gas leak. Emergency crews were scrambled just before midday after reports of hydrogen and chlorine gases escaping from the building’s plant room.
Staff acted fast, clearing visitors and employees from the premises to avoid any risk of exposure.
Toxic Mix of Hydrogen and Chlorine Gases
Both hydrogen and chlorine pose serious health risks. Chlorine, in particular, can cause severe breathing problems if inhaled in large amounts. Rescue teams immediately restricted access to Albany Pool and nearby areas, working to ventilate the building and monitor air quality.
The London Ambulance Service and Metropolitan Police were on-site as a precautionary measure.
Council Warns Locals to Steer Clear
Enfield Council urged residents to avoid the area while emergency crews continued their safety checks. Authorities confirmed the centre will remain closed until the gas leak’s cause is fully investigated.
No injuries have been reported so far, but officials remain on high alert.
