BBC Boss Caught in £800k Loan Scandal Linked to Boris Johnson
BBC chairman Simon Sharp is under fire after reports emerged he helped former PM Boris Johnson secure a staggering £800,000 loan just weeks before Johnson tipped him for the top BBC job.
Loan Drama Exposed by Sunday Times
The Sunday Times revealed a shadowy deal involving Canadian millionaire Sam Blyth — a distant cousin of Johnson’s. Blyth reportedly asked Sharp to act as guarantor for the hefty loan. Where the loan money originally came from remains a mystery.
The scandal escalated when the Cabinet Office sent a warning letter to Johnson, telling him to stop leaning on Sharp for personal financial advice due to his upcoming BBC role.
Johnson Family Defends Sharp
Johnson’s sister Rachel jumped to Sharp’s defence, insisting the loan was handled transparently and above board. Speaking to BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, she said:
“All the parties involved have made statements to The Sunday Times, which show they did everything above board and everything was transparent. I recommend that you have Simon Case, who appears to be the linchpin in both of these stories, come on and explain what happened.”
Sharp himself claimed he simply put Blyth in touch with Cabinet Secretary Simon Case at Blyth’s request and played no further role.
Labour Calls for Probe Into BBC Chair Appointment
Meanwhile, Labour has demanded a full investigation into how Sharp was appointed BBC chairman amid growing “sleaze” allegations. The party warns the scandal risks undermining trust in the broadcaster’s top ranks.
