Isle of Wight Festival Horror: Man Fighting for Life After Boat Capsizes During Killers Gig

Festival Fun Turns Nightmare on River Medina

A man is seriously ill and fighting for his life after a small rowing boat he was in capsized on the River Medina in the early hours of Monday morning. The trio had taken to the water to watch The Killers at the Isle of Wight Festival but disaster struck on their way back.

Emergency services rushed to the scene just after midnight when a member of the public spotted revellers struggling in the water near Newport Rowing Club, close to the festival’s iconic big wheel.

Ignoring Safety Costs Nearly Fatal

Despite having lifejackets on board, the three men — believed to be drunk — ignored advice to wear them properly. The boat overturned, leaving them in freezing water with boats moving nearby, raising huge risks of injury.

Mark Harker from Cowes Lifeboat Station described the shock rescue:

“They were very cold and dark which was not good for them and boats were moving around, so there was a good chance they could get hit… They were clearly in shock and very stunned.”

Rescue Operation and Aftermath

  • The trio had paddled from Folly Hill up the River Medina to catch the festival headliners.
  • A passing boat rescued two of them, while the third man was treated on shore and remains seriously ill with symptoms of secondary drowning.
  • The Coastguard search and rescue team and Cowes RNLI lifeboat recovered the group and the upturned boat filled with empty cans and two life jackets.
  • All three were taken to St Mary’s Hospital for urgent treatment.

Festivalgoers Warned: Lifejackets Save Lives

This terrifying incident is a stark reminder of the dangers of boating under the influence and ignoring basic safety. Authorities continue to investigate and urge festival revellers to stay safe around water.
