New Chains to Boost Cowes Floating Bridge
The Cowes floating bridge is getting a vital upgrade next week. Experts will swap out the old chains – which have reached the end of their three-year lifespan – with brand-new ones. This essential work means the bridge will be out of action from 7am to 7pm, Monday 8 July through Friday 12 July.
Foot Passenger Service to Keep Isle Moving
While the bridge is offline, a foot passenger service will run from 5am every morning to keep locals and visitors on the move. The upgrade also includes depth surveys to meet the Cowes Harbour Commission’s strict chain clearance rules.
Quieter, Smoother Rides on the Horizon
The outgoing chains were the originals from the previous floating bridge and have done their time. The new chains, combined with rubber matting installed last year, promise to cut noise and vibrations when the bridge docks – good news for drivers and pedestrians alike.
Bridge Performance Still Solid Amid Busy Periods
Despite wear and tear, the bridge has performed well, clocking 94.3% of scheduled operating hours last month. It carried over 40,000 foot passengers and 19,200 cars, even through the bustling festival period. The fresh chains are expected to last two to three years, keeping the vital link steady for the foreseeable future.
