Isle of Wight First to Get NHS COVID-19 Contact Tracing App

The Isle of Wight is leading the charge in the fight against coronavirus. Residents will be the first in the UK to access the new NHS COVID-19 contact tracing app, a key tool in the government’s plan to slow the spread and ease lockdown.

Test, Track and Trace Kicks Off on the Island

  • The Isle of Wight is the first phase of the government’s ‘test, track and trace’ programme.
  • NHS and council staff can download the app from 4pm on Tuesday, May 5.
  • All island residents will get access from Thursday, May 7, with leaflets and support to help use the app.
  • Enhanced contact tracing and swab testing will complement the app to minimise COVID-19 spread.

The new app, developed by NHSX and a team of top scientists, speeds up contact tracing dramatically. It alerts users if they’ve been near someone reporting symptoms, even unknown contacts like strangers on public transport.

Users who report symptoms through the app get anonymous alerts and advice, including how to order a coronavirus test — coming soon to the app.

Privacy and Security Top Priority

Experts from the National Cyber Security Centre helped build the app to keep user data safe. All information will only be used for NHS care, research, and managing the virus, fully complying with UK data protection laws.

Those without smartphones can still report symptoms and order tests via online or phone services. Contact tracers will also follow up with anyone exposed to the virus, ensuring no one slips through the cracks.

Government and Health Chiefs Back the Launch

Matt Hancock, Health Secretary: “The Isle of Wight is playing a vital role with this pioneering work to help keep Britain safe. This will pave the way for a nationwide roll-out when the time is right.”

“This app will alert people to potential exposure and help control the spread of coronavirus, supporting our heroic health staff and enabling a safer route out of lockdown.”

Matthew Gould, NHSX Chief Executive: “By launching the NHS COVID-19 app, we can reduce virus transmission by rapidly alerting people who may have been exposed.”

“Combined with testing and contact tracing, this technology is key to beating coronavirus and returning life to normal.”

Professor Jonathan Van Tam, Deputy Chief Medical Officer: “This app, alongside traditional contact tracing, gives us the best chance to slow the spread and ease social distancing safely.”

Dr Yvonne Doyle, Public Health England: “The Isle of Wight trial will prepare us for a nationwide contact tracing team of 18,000, making sure contacts of COVID-19 cases are followed up promptly.”

Why the Isle of Wight?

The island’s single NHS trust and manageable population size make it perfect for piloting this new tech and testing system. Its geographic isolation also helps contain the trial, providing valuable lessons before the app rolls out nationally in mid-May.

Dave Stewart, Isle of Wight Council Leader: “We’re proud to be the first to use this new digital technology. It’s a tightly controlled approach to keep our community safe and help us get back on our feet.”

“If successful, the island will have played a crucial role in helping the whole country tackle COVID-19 and rebuild safely.”

This app is a vital weapon in the UK’s coronavirus strategy, helping track and isolate cases faster than ever. The path out of lockdown won’t be instant, but with technology and teamwork, Britain inches closer to normal life.
