Gatwick Plans Massive Passenger Boost Spark Kent Council Fury
Gatwick Aims to Skyrocket Passenger Numbers
Gatwick Airport wants to ramp up passenger numbers from 46.6 million in 2019 to a staggering 75.6 million by 2038. The airport’s latest proposals involve routine use of the northern runway — a move Kent County Council (KCC) warns is a sneaky backdoor way to turn Gatwick into a two-runway airport.
Kent Council Slams Plan as “Intolerable”
KCC stands firm on its 2014 policy, originally targeting a second runway debate. Now, they see Gatwick’s northern runway plan as doubling down on expansion without proper approval.
“KCC has long argued the impacts of Gatwick’s current single runway configuration are already unacceptable,” said David Brazier, KCC’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport.
“A potential increase of these impacts on local communities and the environment would be intolerable.”
“Routine use of the northern runway is not something KCC can support.”
Noise, Emissions, and Transport Woes
KCC’s official response highlights serious worries:
- More aircraft movements causing increased noise over Kent
- Rising carbon emissions harming the environment
- Insufficient rail and public transport connections for the surge in passengers
- Intensification risks on Gatwick’s main runway
