Road Cops Crack Down on Drink and Drug Driving This December

This December, Roads Policing Unit officers are hunting down impaired drivers across Kent. The crackdown targets anyone caught committing moving traffic offences, with roadside breath tests now routine — even if drink driving isn’t initially suspected.

Instant Drug Tests and Fixed Site Checks

Suspected drug drivers face immediate drug-wipe sample tests at the roadside. This quick check determines if a driver is unfit, before they are taken to custody for blood tests. Intelligence-led fixed site checks will also be in full swing, alongside safety talks warning against drink or drug driving.

Last Year’s Haul: 225 Arrests from Over 460 Stops

Last December’s campaign saw over 460 vehicles stopped and 225 arrests for impaired driving. Chief Inspector Craig West, head of the Roads Policing Unit, warned: “The harm caused by driving under the influence is huge and totally avoidable. Drink and drug-driving rank among the top causes of serious crashes, alongside speeding, using mobiles, and not wearing seatbelts.”

Local Leaders Plead: Don’t Risk It This Festive Season

Kent County Council’s David Brazier urged drivers: “Don’t drink or take drugs if you’re planning to get behind the wheel. Our roads must be safe for everyone.”

Medway Council’s Cllr Phil Filmer added: “There’s no excuse for drink or drug driving, especially at Christmas. One bad decision can ruin many lives. Be responsible — don’t drink and drive.”

Top Safety Tips: Plan Ahead or Pay the Price

  • Always plan your journey if drinking.
  • Set aside money for a taxi.
  • Nominate a sober driver in your group.
  • Remember alcohol lingers overnight — don’t risk it.

Legal Warning: There is no safe level of alcohol for drivers. Getting caught can mean up to six months in prison, unlimited fines, and hefty driving bans. Causing death while drink or drug driving could land you up to 14 years behind bars.
