Kent Fire Service to End 30-Year Eurotunnel Fire Contract in 2025
End of an Era for Tunnel Fire Cover
Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) has announced it will end its nearly 30-year private contract providing fire cover at the Channel Tunnel in 2025. Since the early 1990s, KFRS has offered exclusive round-the-clock fire and rescue services at the crucial European gateway, operating separately from its regular public duties.
Safety Assurances Amid Contract Exit
Chief Executive Ann Millington gave the public a clear message: safety won’t take a hit despite the contract ending. While the operation is no longer viable for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, fire cover and safety will not be compromised – there will still be a fire station at the tunnel with a full fire and rescue team,” she vowed.
Partnership to Continue Without Contract
Millington stressed that strong collaboration with Eurotunnel will persist beyond 2025. Firefighters from nearby stations in Dover, Folkestone, and Ashford will stay ready to respond swiftly to any emergencies at the tunnel, following proven protocols.
Eurotunnel Eyes New 24/7 Fire Service Providers
Eurotunnel is now gearing up to find fresh options for round-the-clock onsite fire services as the contract wraps up. The goal is a smooth handover that keeps tunnel safety top priority throughout the transition.
Both KFRS and Eurotunnel are committed to maintaining the highest standards in emergency response and safety, protecting travellers and infrastructure alike.
