Labour Shocks Tory Strongholds with Stunning By-Election Wins
Labour Snatches Tamworth from Tories
In a stunning political upset, Labour has smashed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s stronghold by overturning a Tory majority of nearly 20,000 in Tamworth.
Labour’s Sarah Edwards clinched victory, beating Tory Andrew Cooper by 1,316 votes. The result signals a major Labour resurgence. Party leader Sir Keir Starmer hailed the win as “phenomenal,” saying it shows Labour is “back in the service of working people and redrawing the political map.”
The Conservatives defended a massive 19,600 majority. But a colossal 23.9% swing to Labour wiped that out – the second biggest swing in by-election history.
“To those who have given us their trust, and those considering doing so, Labour will spend every day acting in your interests and focused on your priorities. Labour will give Britain its future back,” Starmer said.
Mid Bedfordshire Falls to Labour After Decades
Labour’s shockwaves didn’t stop in Tamworth. In Mid Bedfordshire, Labour trumped both Tory and Lib Dem candidates, overturning a Tory majority of 25,000 in a seat held by Conservatives since 1931.
The by-election happened after former culture secretary Nadine Dorries quit amid fury over being snubbed a peerage in Boris Johnson’s resignation honours list. The contest was fierce, but Labour’s Alistair Strathern edged out Tory Festus Akinbusoye with 13,872 votes to 12,680.
