Lewis Hamilton’s Narrow Escape From Death While Surfing Hawaii’s Deadly Waves
Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton has revealed his terrifying brush with death during a surfing trip. The 39-year-old world champion nearly drowned while catching waves at Hawaii’s notorious Banzai Pipeline.
Monster Wave Hits Unexpectedly With Kelly Slater
Hamilton was surfing alongside American pro Kelly Slater when disaster struck. They were riding the waves, enjoying the ocean’s thrill, when a colossal 20-foot wave appeared out of nowhere, turning the calm surf into a deadly trap.
“I could hear the wave crash above me,” Hamilton recounted. “I came back up gasping for air but the next was coming so I went back down. I nearly ran out of air. I nearly drowned.”
Surfboard Snaps as Four Gigantic Waves Crash Down
Hamilton was forced underwater to dodge a terrifying set of four massive waves barreling towards him. The power of the ocean snapped his surfboard clean in two, leaving him battling beneath the surface in what he called the “kill zone.”
He described the moment to his YouTube show Hot Ones: “It was heart-stopping. I was fighting to breathe and get back to the surface.”
Respect for Pro Surfers After Brush With Death
Despite the near-tragedy, Hamilton praised the skills of professional surfers. “After that, I was like, ‘OK, massive props to these surfers.’”
The F1 star is no stranger to surfing, having first learned under Kelly Slater’s wing at the Surf Ranch in California back in 2019. But this hair-raising experience in Hawaii is a stark reminder of how deadly the ocean can be, even for the most seasoned athletes.
