Two Walkers Cut Off by Tide Rescued Near Bembridge
Bembridge lifeboat and Sandown crew launched tonight (Thursday 5th July 2018) after two walkers got trapped by the incoming tide. The pair were stranded about 20 metres up a cliff, unable to reach safety as the water rose.
Coastguard Rescue Teams Rush to Scene
Coastguard search and rescue teams from Bembridge and Ventnor were quickly mobilised. One walker had injured his leg, and both were suffering from cold. With fading daylight and the tide still rising, the rescue operation continued for over an hour and a half after the pair raised the alarm by phone to the Coastguard operations centre.
Risky Rescue from 104-Metre Cliff
A member of the Bembridge Coastguard was lowered down the sheer 104-metre cliff face to reach the casualties. Both were assessed on the spot and carefully transferred by lifeboat back to Bembridge Lifeboat Station, wrapped in survival blankets.
Medical Treatment on Arrival
Isle of Wight Ambulance Service medics treated the walkers for their injuries and the effects of exposure. The operation ended safely, with both walkers now in medical care. More updates to follow.
