Dramatic Sea Rescue Off Worthing: Lifeboats Save Crew From Sinking Vessel
On Sunday, April 21, Littlehampton RNLI lifeboat crews sprang into action after a Mayday call reported a sinking vessel four miles south of Worthing. The B-class lifeboat Renee Sherman from Littlehampton had just finished a joint exercise with Shoreham’s Tamar class lifeboat in rough seas and strong force 4 north-easterly winds.
Rapid Response in Brutal Conditions
At 11:40 AM, both lifeboats were called out by HM Coastguard to the emergency. Upon arriving, rescuers found the casualties clinging to a 123 vessel, which was quickly evacuated. The survivors were transferred first to the Littlehampton lifeboat and then to Shoreham’s Tamar lifeboat for warmth and shelter.
Survivors Brought to Safety
The rescued party was safely taken back to Littlehampton Marina. Lifeboat Operations Manager Nick White praised the quick-thinking crew and nearby vessels that helped save the day.
“Small boats face deadly risks in these cold, choppy waters, especially with sea temperatures around 10°C,” said White. “The quick action from vessels nearby before our arrival was crucial, as the casualty vessel sank rapidly.”
The daring rescue highlights the harsh conditions small boats often battle at this time of year and the vital work of the RNLI in keeping sea users safe.
