Littlehampton RNLI Unveils Nimble New Lifeboat 'Spirit of Fidelity'
D-Class Lifeboat Already Saving Lives
Littlehampton RNLI has officially launched its latest rescue craft, the agile Spirit of Fidelity, at a heartfelt ceremony on Saturday 27 September. The new D-Class lifeboat, known as D-902, has already been on 20 rescue missions since arriving in May. These vessels are the RNLI’s workhorse, expertly handling surf, shallow waters, and tricky close-to-shore rescues.
Family Legacy Inspires Lifeboat Name
The lifeboat was generously funded by Michael and Alison Veale, whose family has supported the RNLI for over 65 years. Michael Veale emotionally spoke at the event:
“Our gift of D-902, named Spirit of Fidelity, honours my father’s memory and continues my family’s long-standing commitment to the RNLI. This naming ceremony has been a deeply moving experience for us.”
Community Gathers to Celebrate Lifesaving Gift
In a classic RNLI tradition, the Veales handed over the lifeboat to Trustee Andrew Jordan, who passed it to Nick White, Littlehampton’s Lifeboat Operations Manager. The dedication, led by shore crew and chaplain Mike Meachin, ended with a sparkling champagne christening. White praised the new boat’s impact:
“Since May, Spirit of Fidelity has helped our crew save lives. We’re enormously grateful to Michael and Alison for their generosity and proud to call Littlehampton home to this vital lifeboat.”
The event attracted local VIPs like MP Alison Griffiths and Mayor Alan Butcher, plus crew members and supporters. Michael Veale paid tribute to the RNLI team:
“While we donated the lifeboat, it’s the crew’s bravery and professionalism — backed by the wider RNLI — who save lives on every mission.”
Critical Lifesaving Coverage for West Sussex Coast
The Spirit of Fidelity will be a vital lifeline for the Littlehampton RNLI station, covering the West Sussex coastline from Worthing to Bognor Regis. With this trusty new craft on patrol, locals can rest easy knowing rapid, expert rescue is close at hand.
