London City Airport’s Saturday Flight Extension Slammed by Newham Council

London City Airport’s bid to stretch Saturday flying hours has been smashed by Newham Council’s strategic development committee. The airport wanted to push flights beyond the current 1pm cut-off to 6.30pm all year, and up to 7.30pm in summer. They also aimed to boost early morning flights from six to nine between 6.30am and 7am.

Residents Fight Back Against Noise and Pollution

For 25 years, London City has honoured a “weekend respite” rule banning flights from 1pm Saturday until 12.30pm Sunday, giving locals peace from the drone of planes. The airport’s extension plan sparked fury among residents, triggering 1,644 objections versus just 75 letters backing the proposal.

Neighbours blasted the plan over noise pollution, saying aircraft already drown out conversations and wreck outdoor garden time. Fears about worsening air pollution and traffic congestion also fuelled the backlash. Nearby councils including Lewisham, Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Southwark, Greenwich, Havering, Hackney, and Tower Hamlets joined the chorus of complaints.

Airport Promises Quieter Jets and More Jobs

London City Airport insisted the expansion would use quieter, cleaner planes and bring fresh local job opportunities. Backers argued it would boost businesses, create employment, and offer travellers more destinations — possibly with cheaper fares.

Newham Council Stands Firm Against Expansion

Newham Council, which has declared a climate emergency, rejected the plans to protect residents’ health and tackle environmental damage. A council spokesperson said the move reflects serious ongoing concerns over noise and pollution harming nearby communities.

The decision marks a clear victory for residents determined to keep their weekends peaceful and their air clean, shutting down London City Airport’s hopes for longer Saturday skies – for now.
