Smoke Fills Charlton After Warehouse Blaze
Residents in Charlton have been told to keep windows and doors shut as thick smoke wafts from a fire at a derelict warehouse on Penhall Road. The London Fire Brigade was called out at 9:54am and managed to bring the blaze under control by 11:40am. But smoky skies linger over the local area, prompting health warnings.
Firefighters Rush to the Scene
The fire broke out in a single-storey abandoned warehouse, sending up a huge plume of smoke. A massive emergency response was launched with ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters from East Greenwich, Greenwich, New Cross, Poplar, Millwall and more battling the flames. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, and around 20 people had already evacuated before crews arrived.
Road Closures Cause Chaos
Traffic has taken a hit with road closures affecting the A206 Woolwich Road in both directions. Drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible. Meanwhile, London Fire Brigade’s control team has been swamped with calls reporting the fire, showing the community’s swift alarm and concern.

“London Fire Brigade was called at 09:54 to a fire on Penhall Road. The blaze was brought under control by 11:40. Crews from multiple nearby stations worked tirelessly at the scene. The area including the A206 Woolwich Road remains impacted by smoke,” said a Brigade spokesperson.
