London on Red Alert! The London Fire Brigade has slammed out a wildfire warning as the capital braces for an unexpected heatwave. With temps soaring to a balmy 20°C this Friday, the risk of grass and open land fires is spiking – and the city’s fire crews want you to stay sharp.

Blazing Danger: Amber Wildfire Warning in Effect

The Met Office has slapped London with an amber wildfire alert all week. After a dry spring, even a tiny spark could trigger a savage blaze in parks and woodlands.

Paul McCourt, Assistant Commissioner at London Fire Brigade, said:

“We want everyone to enjoy the sunshine but we urge people to take the necessary precautions to stay safe and help prevent a grass fire from starting.”

“Recent fires in Los Angeles and South Korea show how fast these infernos can spread – even when it’s not the hottest day.”

McCourt warns against disposable barbecues and any open flames on balconies or in parks. He also hit home the need to ditch cigarettes and rubbish safely – frequent wildfire triggers.

How Wildfires Start: It Takes Just One Spark

Dry grass, shrubs, and litter flare up at the drop of a match. With gusty winds, fires race across dry land in minutes.

Top wildfire culprits include:

  • Unextinguished cigarettes
  • Neglected disposable barbecues
  • Glass bottles focusing sunlight
  • Litter acting as fuel

London Fire Brigade Teams Up to Fight Flames

The brigade is joining forces with local councils and landowners to lower fire risks and push public safety messages during dry spells.

“We’re taking this warning seriously and ask the public to do the same,” said McCourt. “If everyone plays their part, we can reduce the risk of fires and keep people safe.”

Weekend Warning: Enjoy Sunshine, But Stay Fire-Wise

With warm weather set to pack parks and gardens this weekend, the brigade’s advice is simple: soak up the sun sensibly and stay alert to fire dangers.
