Londoners urged to stay vigilant at Christmas events amid terror fears
Big Crowds, Bigger Targets
London’s bustling Christmas markets, carol services, and festive gatherings are in the firing line this holiday season. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Jon Savell of the Met Police warns these popular events attract serious terrorist threats.
“London hosts some of the biggest and most popular events in the UK during the festive season. Sadly, as shown by the recent attack on Sydney’s Jewish community during a Hanukkah event, these gatherings can attract terrorist threats.”
Spot Something? Say Something!
The Met’s winter safety campaign urges Londoners to trust their instincts. If you see anything suspicious, don’t hesitate—alert event staff, security, or contact police straight away. Last year, 20% of reports to the Anti-Terrorism Hotline and gov.uk/ACT sparked police probes.
Police on High Alert
The Met will beef up patrols before, during, and after festive events. Counter-terror officers will be highly visible across the capital as part of Project Servator. Plus, the Met is teaming up with the Community Security Trust to guard synagogues and community centres.
DAC Savell said: “We want everyone to enjoy the festive season feeling safe. Don’t assume someone else will report a concern. If something doesn’t feel right, say something. Even a quick chat with security or a phone call to the police could make all the difference.”
