A terrifying blaze tore through Poundland on Penge High Street early this morning, sparking fears the building could collapse “at any minute.”

Massive Fire Triggers Evacuations and Road Closures

Emergency teams rushed to the scene just after 4.30am following reports of a huge fire engulfing the two-storey terraced building. Around 100 firefighters are battling the inferno, while about 25 residents have been evacuated to a nearby rest centre as a safety precaution.

Locals have been warned to keep doors and windows closed due to thick, choking smoke blanketing the area. Authorities have shut down Penge High Street and urge drivers to avoid the area as fire crews continue their efforts.

Firefighters Battle Blaze with Heavy Equipment

Fire crews from Beckenham, Forest Hill, Woodside, West Norwood and neighbouring stations are deploying a 32-metre turntable ladder to douse the flames from above. Water jets also spray through shattered front windows as the blaze rages on.

The entire front of the store has had windows blown out, with the iconic Poundland sign badly damaged by smoke. Fire brigade drones have been deployed for aerial views, helping commanders coordinate the response.

By 8.50am, the fire was brought under control, but firefighters are expected to remain on site throughout the day to tackle hotspots and prevent any flare-ups.

Cause Unknown as Investigation Gets Underway

The origin of the blaze remains a mystery. Authorities are investigating, but no cause has been confirmed yet.

Stay Alert for Updates

The fire has caused major disruption in Penge, with the high street likely to stay closed all day. Drivers and shoppers should expect delays and plan alternatives.
