M2 Traffic Nightmare as Police Slam Shut Road Near Medway Viaduct

Motorway mayhem hit Kent this morning after police shut the M2 eastbound following a serious incident near the Medway Viaduct. The stretch between Junction 1 (A2/A289 Strood) and Junction 3 (Chatham/Rochester) remains closed, sparking huge tailbacks and commuter chaos.

Road Closures Spark Gridlock

  • The entire Medway Viaduct span is off-limits to traffic.
  • Drivers are being diverted away from Junction 2, with Cuxton Road also sealed near the bridge.
  • Heavy congestion is reported on the A2 into Strood, especially around Rochester Bridge.
  • Delays stretch back along the Wainscott Bypass heading towards Medway Tunnel.
  • Motorists bound for Dover are urged to find alternative routes via the A229 or A228.

What Went Down?

Kent Police have not yet confirmed details. But eyewitnesses on social media claim a body was found on the hard shoulder near the Medway Bridge, fuelling speculation about a possible fall from an overbridge.

“They didn’t block it from passing cars very well. Don’t think he jumped or he’d be on the bridge,” one driver said.

“Someone jumped off the bridge above the road – not the Medway Bridge itself,” another added.

Police Hunt for Answers

Officers and emergency crews remain on the scene as investigations continue. The road is expected to stay shut throughout the morning rush hour, with no official statement released yet.

The Medway Viaduct is a key artery for thousands of commuters, freight drivers, and cross-county travellers, making this closure a major disruption in Kent.

Call for Witnesses
