The UK’s busiest motorway was brought to a standstill in the early hours of Monday after a distressed man threatened to leap from a bridge barefoot.
Drama Unfolds Over M25 Between Junctions 9 and 10
Police and Highways England shut all eight lanes of the M25 near the Wisley side of the Ockham Lane Bridge after a man called 999 at around 1:50am saying he was suicidal. Despite his desperate state, he told officers he didn’t want to jump with traffic zooming below.
Officers quickly sealed off the area with cordon tape as a tense standoff began.
Brave Negotiators Talk Man Down
Trained police negotiators spent time carefully chatting to the man. Eventually, he agreed to come down safely. He was taken into custody and rushed to hospital by paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service for evaluation.
Major Delays on the M25
The two-hour incident caused gridlock, with traffic stopped in both directions, frustrating thousands of commuters.
A Surrey Police spokesperson declined to release any further details about the drama. But officers’ quick action prevented a potential tragedy on one of Britain’s busiest motorways.
