M25 Speed Limit Fury: Drivers Fuming As 50mph Zone Stuck In Place
Frustration is boiling over for drivers and locals as the 50mph speed limit on the M25 between junctions 5 (Clacket Lane) and 7 (M23) keeps traffic crawling. Despite roadworks officially ending on April 23, the slow zone could drag on for another 12 weeks.
Why The Slower Speed Sticks Around
National Highways confirmed the reduced limit isn’t going anywhere just yet. They need more time to finish post-project testing and system calibration on the new smart motorway features. The restriction was first set after emergency refuge areas were installed along this stretch.
“This can only happen when all lanes are open. Once the system meets our rigorous standards, the national speed limit will be restored,” National Highways said.
More Closures and Diversions to Come
Commuters and residents are angry about the ongoing strict enforcement of 50mph, which has caused delays and gridlock. To complete the work, additional overnight closures and diversions are expected as the smart motorway setup is finalised.
For now, drivers trapped in the slow lane will just have to wait it out while National Highways keeps tweaking the motorway’s new tech – and the motorway mystery drag continues.
