Man’s Arms and Face Melted by 11,000-Volt Shock in Scrap Metal Horror
A desperate scrap metal thief’s arms and face were left melted after touching a live 11,000-volt cable. Darren Harris, 35, thought the power was off when he broke into an abandoned building in Wolverhampton during lockdown. The horrific shock almost killed him.
Miraculous Survival After Devastating Burns
On November 24, 2020, Harris suffered shocking injuries: his forearms were melted down to the bone, he lost his left thumb, both ears, and the tip of his nose. The electric blast knocked him unconscious.
He spent months in Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, including 27 days in a coma and 23 operations, with more surgeries still ahead. Doctors called his survival “miraculous” given the intensity of the electrical surge.
Grateful Reunion With Life-Saving Paramedics
Four years later, Harris met the paramedics and trauma doctor who saved his life—Gary Williams, Matt Walker, and Dr. Richard Fawcett.
“During lockdown, I was struggling for funds and I went to get illegal scrap metal from buildings that were getting demolished. Unfortunately, I put my left arm into an 11KV switchboard, which completely melted my forearms down to the bone,” Harris told the BBC.
“I ran in front of the ambulance on its way to me to flag it down, and both faces of the paramedics were as white as a ghost.”
Back to Work and Giving Back Despite Life-Altering Injuries
Despite the brutal injuries, Harris has made a remarkable comeback as a self-employed scaffolder. He’s defied doubts about his fitness for work and also raised funds for the Katie Piper Foundation, which supports burn victims.
Dr. Fawcett praised his resilience: “To see Darren a few years later doing so fantastically well is unbelievable.”
A Stark Warning Against Risky Begging
Reflecting on his ordeal, Harris admitted, “I should never have been on the site, but I paid a price for that.” His story is a chilling warning about the deadly risks of illegal scrap scavenging and ignoring safety.
