Massive Sinkhole Swallows M1 Southbound After Water Main Burst in London

A huge sinkhole has opened up on the M1 in Greater London, forcing the closure of the southbound carriageway between Junction 4 (Edgware) and Junction 1 (Brent Cross).

Flood Chaos Hits A406 Staples Corner

The M1 shutdown comes after a major water main burst flooded the A406 Staples Corner, causing travel chaos in the area. Transport for London has rushed to the scene and is working closely with utility companies to fix the disaster as fast as possible.

Fortunately, delays near Junction 4 are currently minimal but could worsen as repairs continue.

Follow the Hollow Circle – Your Diversion Route

Drivers must follow the hollow circle diversion signs to bypass the closure:

  1. Exit the M1 at Junction 4 onto the A41 Watford Bypass.
  2. At the first roundabout, take the 1st exit to continue on A41 Edgware Way/Watford Bypass.
  3. At Apex Corner roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto A1 Watford Way.
  4. At Mill Hill Circus roundabout, take 2nd exit to stay on A1 Edgware Bypass/Watford Way.
  5. At Fiveways Corner interchange, take 2nd exit to rejoin A41 Watford Way southbound towards Central London.
  6. Continue on A41 through Colindale and Hendon Central before reaching Brent Cross interchange and proceeding south towards London.

Traffic Alert: Expect Delays and Consider Alternatives

Local drivers are warned to expect extra journey time and travel disruption. If possible, delay your trip or use alternate routes to avoid the snarls.

Transport for London is urging motorists to stay safe and heed all diversion signs while repairs are underway.
