Met Police and Southwark Council Nab Gear for Illegal Rave in Dulwich Railway Tunnel
Officers from Lambeth and Southwark teamed up with Southwark Council’s Wildlife Department to raid a disused railway tunnel in Dulwich Wood. They seized sound gear, barriers, a DJ setup, and even a makeshift bar — all ready for an unlicensed music event (UME).
Secret Rave Stopped in Its Tracks
On Wednesday, 6 January, police and council officials showed up at the tunnel and found locked gates. After forcing their way in, they discovered a fully prepped party spot hidden behind a large black curtain — designed to keep the illegal rave under wraps.
Wildlife at Risk as Well as Locals
Police Sergeant Jonathan Adams, responsible for Dulwich Safer Neighbourhoods, said: “This old railway tunnel was known to us as a hotspot for UMEs, which not only risk spreading Covid but also put residents and unique local wildlife in danger.”
He added: “The tunnel is a protected bat site. These illegal raves don’t just disrupt people — they disturb fragile ecosystems too.”
Community Outraged at Reckless Party Plans
Councillor Evelyn Akoto, Cabinet Member for Public Health & Community Safety, slammed the would-be revellers. “I’m horrified anyone would risk their own safety or that of others by attending an illegal event in the middle of a pandemic,” she said.
“We’ll keep backing the police in shutting down these dangerous and thoughtless raves. Only by working together can we stop illegal parties and protect our communities.”
The seized equipment is now in police custody as investigations continue.
