Voters are gearing up to pick who runs their local services as around 8,000 councillors go head-to-head across 230 councils.
Mayoral Showdowns and Overnight Counts
Mayoral battles heat up in Bedford, Leicester, Mansfield, and Middlesbrough. Polling stations slam shut at 10pm, with the first results expected just after midnight Friday. A whopping 65 councils will count votes overnight. The rest will start counting Friday morning, with results pouring in throughout the day — including for the four mayoral races. The final verdict is set for around 8pm Friday but could drag on if recounts come into play.
What’s at Stake?
Most councils on the ballot are district councils managing everyday services like bin collections, parks, and local upkeep. This is about who decides how your streets, green spaces, and neighbourhood services are run.
Show Your ID or Miss Out
For the first time, voters must show ID at the polling station. Accepted documents include passports, driving licences, and certain bus passes for seniors and disabled voters. Those without proper ID had a last chance to apply for a free voter certificate — but the deadline slammed shut last week. No ID means no vote.
