NHS Test and Trace Snags Over 130,000 Potential Virus Spreaders
More than 130,000 people at risk of unknowingly spreading COVID-19 have been contacted and told to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace, new government stats reveal. The latest data covers the fourth week of the revamped service, from 18 to 24 June, showing big strides in catching potential spreaders fast.
Lightning-Fast Test Results Slash Waiting Times
Big improvements in test turnaround times are making a real difference. Nearly all test results from regional centres and mobile units are back the day after testing—98% from regional sites and 96.7% from mobiles. Even care home satellite tests see a 73.9% next-day return.
- Swift results speed up contact tracing and reduce virus spread.
- Home testing kits now use 30,000 Royal Mail priority postboxes for quicker collection.
- More mobile units hit hard-to-reach areas, with quicker swab processing at Lighthouse Labs.
Contact Tracing Hits High Marks But Still Faces Challenges
The data shows 75% of confirmed cases were successfully contacted and asked to share close contacts, slightly up from the previous week’s 72.3%. About 73% of close contacts were reached and told to self-isolate, a dip from 82.4% last week.
Since the service revamped on 28 May:
- 26,905 people tested positive in England.
- 73.9% of positive cases were reached and asked for contacts.
- 86.4% of close contacts were notified and ordered to self-isolate.
Public Satisfaction High as Service Keeps Evolving
Dido Harding, Executive Chair of NHS Test and Trace, said: “The data published demonstrates the tireless efforts underway to continue to improve NHS Test and Trace. We have seen significant improvements in the time it takes to process test results, an important step to rapidly reach the contacts of those testing positive and ask them to self-isolate to prevent them spreading the virus further. I am very grateful to all those who have played their part and responded so well to the service. If you have coronavirus symptoms, get a test immediately. You can be confident that you will receive your result quickly, with NHS Test and Trace reaching out to you if you test positive to help you identify your contacts and protect those around you. I urge anyone contacted by NHS Test and Trace to follow the advice they receive.”
A recent survey of over 30,000 users found 87% satisfied with the service and only 3% dissatisfied, showing strong public trust as NHS Test and Trace continues tweaking for speed and reach.
Working hand-in-hand with local councils, the service aims to stay a step ahead in halting COVID-19’s spread across communities. Watch this space for further improvements as the UK battles to beat the virus.
