Drunk Driver Jailed After Fatal Crash That Killed Teen and Left Others Seriously Hurt

Fifteen-year-old Millie Greenway suffered horrific injuries in the crash and sadly died en route to hospital. The other four passengers were seriously injured and remain in ongoing treatment.
Reckless Driving and Police Chase
Smith, from West Street, Sittingbourne, had been drinking with friends earlier in the evening before picking up three more passengers. After drinking more alcohol at a pub, Smith drove off again at speed when he spotted another police car. Witnesses saw the overloaded vehicle speeding before it careered off the road and crashed into a garden.
Legal Consequences and Police Warning
Smith was arrested after failing a roadside breath test, with levels more than twice the legal limit. At Maidstone Crown Court on 13 September 2021, he pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, four counts of causing serious injury, and driving unlicensed and uninsured.
The court handed him a prison sentence of six years and four months. He will face a four-year driving ban upon release.
“Smith’s actions were reckless, showing no regard for road rules or passenger safety. He twice tried to evade police with an overloaded car,” said PC Lee Berridge of Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
“Driving laws exist to protect everyone on the road. I urge all drivers, especially young people, to behave responsibly and avoid tragedies like this.”
