Peacehaven Buzzes as Morrisons Unveils Big Plans
Morrisons hosted a packed public exhibition in Peacehaven last Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Hundreds of locals turned up to check out the big plans for the town and share their views.
Local Concerns and Community Chat
Staff were on hand to guide visitors through the redevelopment of the Meridian Centre site and offer advice. Sussex.News spoke to residents and Morrisons staff to get the inside scoop.
- Some worried the new library, at just 300m2, might be too small. This size was set by East Sussex County Council, and local groups say they will press for changes.
- Ali and Luke from Greetings Card Shop, the oldest leaseholder with 18 years in the centre, fear they may have to shut for up to two years during building work. They’re unsure if they can afford to return once the new smaller units open.
- Morrisons is exploring how shoppers will still access supermarket essentials during construction, including bus options and home delivery. More details will be revealed soon.
Excitement for a Shopping Comeback
The town has lacked decent shopping facilities for years, sending many residents elsewhere. The new plans promise to bring jobs and a fresh buzz to Peacehaven.
What’s in Store for Meridian Centre?
The Meridian Centre has served Peacehaven for 40 years but now needs a complete overhaul. Since snapping up the site in February, Morrisons has drawn up exciting plans to create a vibrant town hub with retail, commercial, and community spaces.
- A brand-new Morrisons supermarket will anchor the development with a massive 27,000 sq ft sales area – 50% bigger than the current Co-op. Expect the popular ‘Market Street’ featuring specialist butchers, bakers, and fishmongers.
- Flexible retail and commercial units of varied sizes will offer more shopping choices.
- The Community House will be integrated into the design, alongside a purpose-built library operated by East Sussex County Council.
- A public square for markets and community events will be introduced, complete with extensive landscaping.
- The new car park will hold 309 spaces including disabled bays, parent & child spots, click & collect areas, and electric vehicle charging points.
Peacehaven locals appear eager for this long-awaited makeover set to breathe new life into their town centre.
