Inferno Hits Battersea Block: Over 50 Firefighters Battle Blaze
More than fifty firefighters and a fleet of fire engines rushed to Holcroft House, an eight-storey block on Ingrave Street, Battersea, after a fierce fire broke out just after 6pm on Thursday evening.
Flames Tear Through Seventh Floor Flat
The London Fire Brigade were called to the scene following multiple emergency calls reporting the blaze. The fire ripped through a four-room flat on the building’s seventh floor, completely destroying it.
Fire crews rescued one woman and two men, escorting them to safety using smoke hoods and breathing apparatus. All three were treated on-site by London Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation.
Road Closures and Daunting Response
Ingrave Street was shut both ways between Falcon Road and Wye Street as emergency services tackled the flames. Firefighters from Tooting, Lambeth, Brixton, Chelsea, and Hammersmith stations joined the operation.
The Brigade’s 999 control room received 40 urgent calls about the visible blaze. The fire was brought under control after 1.5 hours, with crews leaving the scene by 7pm.
Smoke Escape Hoods Protect Victims
Fire escape hoods provided crucial protection, guarding against four deadly gases including carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide for up to 15 minutes. These hoods filter toxic smoke to ease breathing but don’t supply oxygen.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson confirmed, “Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to the flat fire on Ingrave Street yesterday evening.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
