NHS App set for major glow-up with personalised care features

The NHS App is about to get a serious upgrade, bringing tailored healthcare straight to your fingertips.

New Features Rolling Out by March 2023

From early 2023, more folks in England will be able to view medical records, manage hospital elective appointments, and receive direct messages from their GP through the app.

  • Receive NHS notifications, including Covid-19 vaccine reminders and prescription alerts
  • View and manage hospital appointments across participating NHS trusts
  • Access and update GP records by default, with options to request past info
  • Register with a GP practice and manage contact details on a sleek user profile

Digital Revolution to Save Time and Cash

The government plans a digital makeover aimed at making healthcare faster, simpler, and more personalised — while cutting costs for the NHS.

By December 2023, 90% of NHS trusts should have electronic patient records, with all social-care providers using digital records.

And by September 2024, you’ll be able to complete your hospital pre-assessment checks from home.

Eye on the Prize: 75% Adult Usage by 2024

The target is ambitious — have 75% of adults using the app by March 2024. Right now, just under half (28 million people) have downloaded it.

Face-to-face video consultations via the app are in the pipeline, expected by March 2024, offering even more convenience.

Experts Back the Push for Digital Care

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said, “We are embarking on a radical programme of modernisation that will ensure the NHS is set up to meet the challenges of 2048 – not 1948, when it was first established.”

Sarah Sweeney from the health charity National Voices welcomed the plans:

“We haven’t yet realised the full potential of digital tools to support person-centred, inclusive, and accessible care for people, and there’s a lot more to learn. We look forward to exploring how digital tools can be used to make what matters to people matter in health and care.”
